A Man Is Not A Financial Plan

By Sandy Naidu | May 25, 2008

I am currently listening to a radio show (in the background) - a very interesting topic is being discussed on the show. The show title is ‘A man is not a financial plan’. Its a topic that is very close to my heart. A lot of women (irrespective of whether they are staying at home or working), leave all the financial aspects of running a household to their husbands.

I was raised in a family where my mum was in charge of all the finances - my dad just brought home the bacon….but it was my mum who cooked the bacon and also multiplied the bacon many times over (I hope you are with me). And this had a huge impact on me and my sister - a huge positive impact.

I now understand that not all households are run that way…In some households, women are completely unaware of whats happening with the finances….They get some monthly allowance from their husband and the rest is managed by the man…This might seem to be a perfect arrangement but is it really?

A Man Is Not A Financial Plan If there is a break up in the marriage, the women are completely at a loss. Marriage break up or not, I think it is important for every woman to know whats happening with the finances….But the good news is that these days not many women are like this…Most take an active interest in the finances…

Are you one of those women who is taking a back seat while your husband is taking care of all the finances? Then get involved…Draw up the budgets, pay the bills and plan for the future. Don’t leave it all to your partner - Finances is a partnership. And it is not complicated….One important thing - when I say be involved in finances, I am not saying that every woman needs to work outside of the home…I myself quit my 9 to 5 job after my daughter was born…What I mean is, it does not matter how many incomes you have, or who is working or who is not - all the income has to be managed as a partnership (if you are in a relationship with some one).

Good point made! I agree that it should be a partnership in the event of a disaster for eiher one, especially for the woman.
