The Best Day To Fill Your Tank Up
By Sandy Naidu | June 16, 2008
We all know that petrol prices fluctuate greatly during the week and the prices are never uniform across all the petrol stations. It has been reported that these rapid rises and falls are due to some anti competitive practices exercised by petrol companies and the service stations. If that is the case then it is definitely sad and something that needs to be fixed…And I am sure that all the concerned bodies are looking into it. Meanwhile the good news for us consumers is that in most cities these petrol prices rises and falls follow a certain set pattern.
ACCC’s studies indicate that petrol prices follow a cycle…A cycle usually lasts up to seven days (a week). So our aim as consumer is to identify on which days in a cycle the petrol price will be at its lowest. And ACCC says that in most major cities in Australia, the lowest price is on Tuesdays and the highest is on Thursdays. The following pictures are from ACCC website and are for Sydney and Melbourne.

And so the best day to fill your tank is on Tuesdays - every cent saved is money in your pocket…Though I have been aware of this information for some time, I have not fully used it to my benefit. I am going to try my best in future to fill my tank only on Tuesdays…
And here are a couple of websites that can help you:
1. MotorMouth: This one helps you to find out where the cheapest petrol stations are in your area…However it is not mandatory for every petrol station to inform MotorMouth of their prices…And hence they don’t seem to have a great amount of data to show in the results…Good concept but has a long way to go but still worth a try…I could not find any data for the area I live in but you might turn out lucky…
2. The federal government has said that it is seriously looking into setting up a fuel watch..Fuel watch website will be of great help to all motorists. There is already one in Western Australia and it has proved to be extremely useful to all motorists there (WA Fuel Watch). It has been reported that the motorists in WA have been able to save around 1000 dollars in a year because of this website. If the fuel watch scheme comes into play then it will become mandatory for all metropolitan and regional petrol stations to publicise their prices at 2pm each day and that will take effect for 24 hours from 6am the following day. All motorists will be able to find the cheapest petrol station in their area….Can’t wait.
